British High Commission speaks on Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest, washes hands off his extradition
The British High Commission, Tuesday, June 29, 2021, spoke on the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
A spokesperson of the British High Commission, Dean Hurlock, told TheCable that while they can confirm Kanu’s arrest, he was not picked up in the UK where he is based.
Recall that Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, had told journalists on Tuesday in Abuja that Kanu was intercepted on Sunday, June 27, 2021, due to “the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services and the interpole.”
According to Hurlock, “Nnamdi Kanu was not arrested in the UK for extradition purposes.”
Kanu who holds both Nigerian and British passports has been residing in the UK since 2017 when he escaped from Nigeria after the Nigerian invaded his home Afara-Ukwu near Umuahia, Abia State, during military’s ‘Operation Python Dance II’ staged to quell agitation for Biafra Republic in September 2017.
The IPOB leader who, according to the AGF was intercepted by the Nigerian security forces and repatriated to Nigeria on Sunday, appeared before Justice Binta Nyako on Tuesday to continue standing trial in his 11 count charge of treasonable felony, terrorism, illegal possession of firearms.
