Bayo Onanuga’s biggest nightmare is Peter Obi whose only crime was defeating Tinubu in Lagos – Mahdi Shehu

A prominent human rights activist and political commentator named Mahdi Shehu has recently issued a statement through his official X account in which he criticises presidential aide Bayo Onanuga for attacking African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina over his comment on Nigeria’s economy. Shehu’s statement was made in response to Bayo Onanuga’s attack on Adesina.
It was recently stated by Adesina that the financial situation of Nigerians is worse now than it was in 1960.
As of 2025, he asserted that Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita had decreased to $824 from $1,847 in 1960.
According to Onanuga, who serves as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Adesina’s claim was not considered credible.
In response, Mahdi Shehu made the suggestion that Onanuga’s reaction was motivated by political considerations.
He made a veiled reference to the fact that Onanuga’s anger was not about the numbers, but rather about his fear of political repercussions.
“It is common knowledge that this will be the outcome. Onanuga’s worst nightmare is Peter Obi, whose only political crime was defeating Tinubu in Lagos, which put an end to all the lies that Tinubu had not been defeated at home, according to what Mahdi,” Shehu wrote.
When Shehu made this statement, he was referring to the presidential election that took place in 2023. In Lagos, a stronghold of President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, the candidate for the Labour Party, emerged victorious.
