AFCON Semi-final Loss: FG, Peter Obi hail Super Eagles’ courage, resilience, fighting spirit
Federal Government and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have sent strong messages of encouragement to the Super Eagles, assuring the national team that Nigeria remains proud of their performance despite their exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, fnipr, praised the Super Eagles for their resilience, unity and commitment throughout the tournament, stressing that their effort resonated deeply with Nigerians at home and abroad.
“Thank you for giving your all and for representing Nigeria with pride and dignity,” Idris said. “Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent.”
The minister noted that while football comes with both triumphs and setbacks, the Super Eagles’ fighting spirit and dedication earned them national respect. According to him, the team reminded Nigerians that wearing the green and white jersey symbolises courage, unity and perseverance.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high. Learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger. Nigeria remains proud of you and grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition,” the statement added.
Idris concluded by reaffirming the government’s support for the team, saying, “Well done, Super Eagles. The nation stands with you, always.”
Similarly, Peter Obi, in a post on his official X handle, commended the players for what he described as a spirited and courageous outing, particularly during the intense 120 minutes of play.
“Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought and heads were not bowed,” Obi wrote. “Thank you for a beautiful 120 minutes of incredible play. You showed your strength and prowess against all odds.”
Obi encouraged the team not to see the defeat as the end of the road, urging them to remain focused on the remaining opportunities in the competition.
“The journey is not over. You have made the nation proud. Keep your heads high, the Eagle never stops soaring. There is another stage, let’s go get that medal. You have done well,” he stated.
